Purpose of Establishment
The purpose of the Foundation is to provide academic research assistance and thereby contribute to the advancement and development of science and culture in Japan.

Program Outline

Our mission is to provide the following programs based on the annual program plans approved by the Board of Directors.

Research Grants

A. General Research Grants

We offer grants for research expenses to researchers or research groups engaged in the applicable fields of study specified in our annual program plans.

In particular, interdisciplinary research is preferred.

B. Research Grants for Specific Theme

The Foundation provides grants for cross-disciplinary/interdisciplinary research on specific themes specified by the Foundation, which is proposed by a group of researchers from a wide range of fields from a variety of perspectives and awarenesses of problems.

Researcher Exchange Support

We provide the following exchange support programs to researchers engaged in the applicable fields of study specified in our annual application guidelines.

A. Short-term Research Program

Financial support for international travel and living expenses is provided to senior researchers (at the professor level) with outstanding research achievements who give lectures, participate in discussions, or undertake study tours outside Japan for the primary purpose of promoting international exchange. The period of this program is no longer than three months.

B. Long-term Research Program

Financial support for international travel and living expenses is provided to mid-career researchers (at the associate professor, lecturer, or assistant professor level) with excellent research achievements who conduct independent or joint research activities outside Japan and contribute to developing their field of study. In principle, the period of this program is one year.

C. Short-term Research Program for International Researchers

Financial support for travel to and living expenses in Japan is provided to senior international researchers (at the professor level) with outstanding research achievements and who give lectures, participate in discussions, or undertake study tours in Japan for the purpose of contributing to international exchange in their research activities. The period of this program is no longer than three months.

D. Long-term Research Program for International Researchers

Financial support for travel to and living expenses in Japan is provided to capable mid-career researchers (at the associate professor level) and young researchers (assistant professors and graduate students) who conduct independent or joint research activities in Japan and contribute to developing their field of study. In principle, the period of this program is one year.

International Academic Exchange Support

A. Support Program for International Research Meetings, etc.

In principle, financial support for expenses regarding participating international researchers, their lodging expenses, and other miscellaneous expenses such as meeting reports is provided to small and medium-size international research meetings (including symposia, seminars, etc.) in all fields of study that are held in Japan.

B. Support Program for International Joint Research Activities

Financial support for research expenses is provided to joint research activities conducted by both Japanese and international researchers. The applicable fields of study conform to the details under “Research Grants” above.
